As a dance competition parent, witnessing your dancer deliver flawless or near flawless performances is undoubtedly a source of immense pride and excitement. To support your dancer in achieving their best on stage, consider these dance mom tips:

1. Prioritize Rehearsal Consistency:

  • Ensure your dancer maintains consistent rehearsal schedules. Regular practice not only refines choreography but also builds muscle memory, contributing to confident and flawless performances. A large number of points are awarded for their technique by the judges. Technique is taught and fine tuned during class time, not on competition days.

2. Encourage Mental Preparedness:

  • Foster mental resilience by encouraging positive visualization and mindfulness techniques. Help your dancer focus on the joy of performing rather than potential stressors, promoting a confident mindset on stage. Instead of thinking about each trick, focus more about transitions and flow of the entire piece bringing the love of dance to the stage. Use a relaxation app to do mindful breathing in and out exercises with eyes closed prior to dancing.

3. Collaborate with Instructors:

  • Communicate closely with dance instructors to understand performance expectations and specific areas for improvement. Instructors' insights can guide targeted practice sessions, refining techniques and ensuring a polished presentation. These conversations can also give direction on what should be worked on at home.

4. Invest in Costumes:

  • Elevate the overall performance by investing in perfectly fitted costumes. Well-fitted, visually appealing costumes contribute to a polished look, enhancing the visual impact of your dancer's presentation. A dancer who feels confident will show that confidence on stage. If dancers don’t have to worry about a costume malfunction, then their focus can be completely on dancing and stage presence. Adding rhinestones to a plain costume (when appropriate) does give extra pizzazz that makes the dancer sparkle.

5. Support Pre-Performance Rituals:

  • Acknowledge and support any pre-performance rituals or routines your dancer may have. Whether it's a specific warm-up routine, listening to their music, meditation, alone time, or a moment of quiet focus, respecting these rituals can help your dancer feel grounded and ready for a flawless performance. After your dancer is put together with hair and costume, it may be a good time to head to the auditorium to watch some other dances, giving them time alone.

Flawless or near-flawless performances are a result of dedication, preparation, and a supportive environment. By implementing these tips, you contribute to creating an atmosphere that nurtures your dancer's confidence and sets the stage for unforgettable moments of excellence during competition season.
