Costumes Upgraded Part 1: Dying Fabric

Costumes Upgraded Part 1: Dying Fabric. Ten minutes before stage time, I heard the terrible words, “Mom, I cannot get my zipper up.”

When I realized it wasn’t a stuck zipper but a broken zipper, we had to take action quickly. Thankfully, we had our handy needle and thread kit https://amzn.to/40rqvlL. As a group effort, we sewed my daughter directly into her costume moments before her number was announced. The crisis was handled, but she still needed to dance at Nationals in a new costume. Instead of spending a fortune on a costume at the end of the dance season, creativity stepped in.

I bought a white romper from a thrift shop. The costume had to be pink. With Rit Dye Liquid in hand https://amzn.to/3MqT9h6, I decided I could do this, even though it was a first for me. I bought a white sports bra https://amzn.to/3u22g1p and dyed that too. Then the pink colors matched perfectly. I followed the directions on the bottle and had great success! I was really nervous about trying this, but the costume turned out amazing!

Using Rit Dye could be a way to upgrade the perfect costume. It is a unique way to create a one-of-a-kind show stopper that no one else will be wearing.

Tips:

  • The Rit Dye offers many different colors. https://amzn.to/3MqT9h6
  •  Know what fabric type you are using, as there is also a dye for synthetic materials.
  • Synthetic Rit DyeMore Liquid Dye https://amzn.to/3FMgqqg
  • On a different project, I tried to use the regular Rit Dye on a synthetic material blend. It did not work. It was clear from the instructions that it wouldn’t work, but I thought I would try anyway. That was a mistake!
  • Since my hands become shaky when I am under stress, I wanted a needle threader. I absolutely love this cute pink bird design because it’s easy to find, hold onto and use. 10 out of 10. https://amzn.to/3FJjIdG
  • Having a hanging organizer has saved me countless times during a frantic dressing room moment since I can see in the clear zipper pockets.  https://amzn.to/3t7scs7
  • A small Seam Ripper is a great tool to have in your organizer bag. I’ve used it for many impromptu things that did not include ripping out thread like positioning rhinestones and unsticking a zipper. https://amzn.to/3sdvlGP
  • The sports bra we bought for this costume was fabulous. It was long enough to wear as a dance top for practice. We ordered more in different colors. https://amzn.to/3u22g1p
